About Us
Elephant Thoughts is a unique group of diverse and passionate educators who enable the highest standards of education regardless of geographic or socio-economic barriers. Active since 2002, we have positively affected the lives of over a million children worldwide. Our presence has been felt around the globe supporting education for some of the world’s most vulnerable children. Across Canada, partnerships with Indigenous communities focus on supporting teachers and youth to achieve high standards of education creating some of our most innovative and effective programs to date.
We are an organization that shares our resources always working through collaboration. We offer support and teamwork not canned solutions. Our work is based on requests from the communities themselves and we take our guidance from them fostering the growth and development they envision. Throughout all of our programming we nurture values of strong environmental stewardship and respect for diversity and inclusion.

The Legacy of the Martin Family
In 1985, when Edith and Ernie Martin and their family started building Riverstone Retreat, their dream was to create a welcoming environment for people to learn, reflect, & celebrate. This beautiful family wished to share their love of organic food, nature, and sustainable living with others.
The Martin family created most of the buildings with their own hands, collecting the rocks, clay, straw, timber and other materials from the land.
In 2018, they recognized the need for a plan to carry on the work they started. After two years of tea and honey around the kitchen table, the Martins honoured Elephant Thoughts by choosing them to continue their legacy and take over Riverstone operations.
Words cannot express the gratitude we feel that the Martins chose to remain living at Riverstone as our resident elders, passing on their knowledge of sustainable building, farming, maple syrup making and more.
The Martins encompass all that is joyful about spending time in this beautiful, natural setting. Just a quick conversation in passing with either Edith or Ernie and you will understand. We would like to thank them for their courage and faith in us for keeping their dream alive.
